Blue Flag Award

Blue Flag Award for Great Western Beach

As most of you may know by now, our beach has been awarded it's Blue Flag status, which is something we are incredibly proud of and worked very hard to achieve.

You might be asking yourself, what a Blue Flag means and why they get awarded?

Well, let us give you a little bit of information on Blue Flag awards.

The Blue Flag beach award is widely considered the gold standard for beaches. Awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the Blue Flag is internationally recognised. For the coastal environment, water quality, safety and access for all: the Blue Flag represents a severe and profound commitment to both people and the environment.

Our beach received this prestigious award at the start of the season, and we couldn’t be happier. It’s been a long time in the making and what makes this even more exciting for Newquay is the fact that the beach is still dog-friendly. Most beaches, when awarded the Blue Flag status, have to ban dogs on the beaches. However, our beach has created dog-friendly zones which the public can enjoy.

Beach manager and surf school owner Adam has this to say: ”It’s massively important for us, a big part of our business is being dog-friendly, we are one of the few beaches in Newquay which is dog-friendly.

"We didn't want to just all of a sudden exclude all of our loyal customers and dog walkers who come down on a daily basis.

Great Western beach is, in fact, the first beach in the country to have both Blue Flag and dog-friendly status.

We are sure you’ve guessed we are over the moon at the award and excited to be a part of keeping Britain's beaches clean and tidy.
